Little South Run 2010

Maher and Curley Take Little South by Storm

Brian Maher of KCH and Pauline Curley of Tullamore Harriers were the stars of the show at this years Little South Run in Kilmacow last Sunday. Over 300 runners took part on a day of glorious sunshine and there were high class fields in both mens and womens races. From the gun Maher, Sandis Bralitis West Waterford, Cillian O’Leary Raheny, Alan McCormack of DSD and Ravis Zaikis West Waterford broke clear covering the first uphill mile in 4.50. The second mile went by in 4.45 but shortly after McCormack who was having his first race in a year dropped out. From here on Maher pushed on and gradually pulled 100m clear upping the pace to a speedy 4.30 over the final mile to come home an impressive winner in 19.08. In the ladies race Beijing Olympic marathoner Pauline Curley looked to repeat her win in this event two years ago and she set the early pace tracked by Aoife Brady of Sportsworld and Martina O’Dwyer of Carrick-on-Suir AC. Churning out 5.40 miles Curley opened a strong lead and never looked like being challenged as she crossed the bridge into the Sports Complex almost a minute ahead of O’Dwyer with Brady another 40 seconds back. Curley sprinted the final 100m to a tremendous cheer for a very popular win in a fine time of 23.10. Great to see the legendary Mick Hayden of Tullamore Harriers down with Pauline for the day. Mick has been Pauline’s mentor for many years and has made an immeasurable contribution to Irish athletics both as an athlete and a coach.

Conor and Aine takes Junior Prizes

Conor Rochford of St Senans AC was a class apart in the junior mens race, despite having raced in the Schools 5000m just the day before. He led the chasing bunch behind the leading group over the first mile and ran on steadily to come home in 9th place overall in a time of 21.47. In 2nd place was another talented club athlete Hugh Morgan who posted a great time of 23.16 and was 17th overall, while team-mate Emmet Blanchfield was 3rd in 25.49. In the junior girls Aine Kinsella again showed that she is a huge talent as she won in 27.28 with fine runs too by sisters Aoife and Orla Butler to make it a great day for St Senans.

Clean Sweep by Juveniles

The clubs juveniles showed that they are a force to be reckoned with as Eoin McKenna, Aaron Donnelly and David Irish took the boys event, while Isabel Morgan, Tara Lacey and Annmarie Moloney won the girls event. In the fancy dress the fast flying Eve Lacey did her blonde bombshell impression to take joint first along with a scary Ava Murphy of Waterford.

Keep it Local

The prize for first locals home went to Mairead Long, Linda Power and Evelyn Molloy in the flying fillies section, while the speedy stallions were Enda Walsh, Luke Morgan and Shane Power. Well done one and all.

Surprise for Bill

There was a lovely surprise for Bill Lacey at the prize-giving when he was the first recipient of the Amanda Wallace Award for outstanding contribution to the Hospice Movement. Bill is the spiritual leader of St Senans and the driving force behind the Little South Run, which will have raised over €35,000 for Kilmacow Hospice since its inception. Amanda sadly passed away since our last race and is greatly missed by all in the community. However its lovely that there is now an award linked to the race to commemorate her and well done to Bill.
