Senans Shine in
National Half Marathon
St Senans athletes
Owen Gahan, Sean Caulfield, PJ Dwyer and
Adele Walsh turned in superb
performances at the Woodies AAI National
Half Marathon in Waterford last unday.
Owen was always close to the leaders and
moved from 6th at half way to
finish in 4th place with a
sub 70 minute clocking. The race winner
was Cillian O’Leary of Raheny Shamrocks
in a time of 67.27, with West Waterford
providing the next two places by way of
Sandis Bralitis 68.03 and Ravis Zakis
68.51 and also took the team win. Sean
Caulfield also had a fine run finishing
in 77, minutes despite having some hard
training of late in preparation for the
Dublin Marathon, including some 28 mile
runs. PJ Dwyer has also been hitting the
road a lot of late and had a fine run in
the O/50 section.
Adele Digs Deep
Adele
Walsh set off with intent and at half
way was in 3rd place behind
leader Maria McCambridge of DSD and Lucy
Darcy of WSportsworld. She had company
in the shape of Madeline Dorney of
Thurles Crokes and Jakie McCarthy of
Kilmore AC and it was going to be a
competitive race for the silver and
bronze medals. At half way the race
turned back onto the Tramore road and
into a strong wind and this linked with
the warm weather made it a stamina
sapping last few miles. By 10 mile Adele
was in 4th but was working
hard to maintain her early fast pace.
Triathlete Eoin Dullea was keeping her
company and over the last three miles
she had to draw on al her reserves, to
finish in a fine time of 85 minutes.
Following the race she did her best to
drink a small reservoir in a effort to
rehydrate and with some sisterly support
gradually recharged the batteries. A
tough one but that’s what makes
champions. In all over 500 competitors
took part making it one of the biggest
fields ever in this competition. Well
done to organisers Waterford AC and also
to Gardai and all who helped steward on
the day.

one of the most popular on the calendar
but entries must be made in advance.
There’s a special commissioned medallion
for all finishers. You can get pick one
up at the Munster Express offices or at
the Hypercentre. The race starts at
12.00am from the RSC abd follows the
same course as last year. Its always a
great occasion so even if you’re not
running why not go along to the RSC and
support the athletes.
First Cross Country
Our first juvenile
cross country challenge takes place in
St Josephs on Thurs 11th Sept
at 6.45pm and will feature athletes from
St Senans, St Josephs and the new United
Striders juvenile club. It will have
races from U/8 to senior and will be
ideal preparation for our forthcoming

Kilmacow.
County ‘B’ T&F in
Thomastown
The County
Kilkenny “B” track and field
championships, postponed on a number of
occasions during the summer owing to
inclement weather, will now take place
on Saturday 20th Sept. At
last week’s meeting of the County
Kilkenny athletics board it was decided
that the Thomastown athletic club will
host the event. The competition which
will commence at 1.00pm is open to all
athletes who finished outside the medals
in the “A” championships in May. (Medal
winners in walks, hurdles and relays are
also eligible to compete). There are
sprints and middle distance races for
all ages. Under 11’s to under 18’s will
also have Shot and Long Jump events. A
Ball Throw competition has been added
for under 8’s, 9’s and 10’s. So weather
permitting a great afternoon of athletic
activity is on the cards.
