St
Senan’s AC was founded in 1977,
following a very successful Parish
Sports, linked to the Community Games of
that year. It is centered around the
Parish of Kilmacow in South Kilkenny,
but also has members from nearby
Mullinavat, and Mooncoin. The club is
based at the local Sports Complex, which
is also home to Kilmacow GAA, soccer and
tennis clubs. It has a 400m grass
running track, shot putt circle and two
long jump pits, while there is also a
cross country facility nearby. The
parish is also in the process of
building a superb new Sports Hall, which
will cater for all sports throughout the
year.
Over
the years the club has also been
indebted to John Dunphy for the use of
his lands for training and this
marvelous running field was used for the
National Interclubs in 1986. Each year
the club holds three events, an Open T
& F on Easter Monday, a 4 Mile Road
Race, titled “The Little South Run”
in mid June and an Open Cross Country in
late September. You can check out our fixture
list for this year’s dates.
Over
the years the club has produced many
national champions and record holders,
chief among these being Perri Williams,
who represented Ireland at the Barcelona
Olympics. Her father Ned was one of the
club’s founder members and also club
coach for over 20 years. Other notable
athletes include Tina Moloney, who was a
double national junior cross country
champion and Bill Lacey who was on the
1983 Irish Junior World Cross Country
team. However the emphasis of the club
is on participation and enjoyment of the
sport at all levels and every athlete is
highly valued.
Today
we have over 75 juvenile and 12 senior
members as well as a committed group of
coaches and helpers. The juveniles train
on Mondays and Wednesdays at 7.00pm in
the Sports Complex, while the seniors
also meet and train at the same venue.
New members of all ages are always
welcome and you can contact any
committee member for details
