Fiona Dennehy
got the club off to a cracking start in
the U/14 walk, as she stormed into the
lead with two laps to go to win in
convincing fashion in a time of 10.89.
Also a medal winner in the Schools
Championships, she is one of our bright
young stars of the future. In the same
race Lydia Meyler also put in a good
performance, placing 8th
overall and she too is a fast improving
athlete. Laura Fennelly went close to a
medal in the U/16 walk finishing a close
4th. Laura was with the
leaders with just 400m to go, but was
edged out on the line. Unlucky this time
but she will have her day before long.
In the U/18 race sister, Catherine
Fennelly had to fight all the way to
secure the gold and this she did in
impressive fashion, winning in a time of
16.43. She also finished ahead of all
the U/19 competitors to demonstrate what
a big talent she is at this event.
Finally Martin Delahunty rounded off a
great championships for our walkers as
he won bronze in the U/18 5000m race.
Martin has been hampered by injury
during the season but is now coming back
into top form. Well done to all. |

Daniel Davis was the
first of our hurdlers in action but
found the going tough on this occasion.
Better known for his exploits in the
middle-distance events, he is an athlete
with a lot of talent who should go well
over the country later this year. Colin
Butler was in both the 110mH and the
400mH with the longer race his
strongest. He didn’t make it out of
the heats in the 110mH but ran a
cracking race in the 400mH, where he
missed out on a medal by just two tenths
of a second. His time of 61.75 was a new
PB. A really dedicated athlete he also
has plenty of natural talent and is a
real exciting prospect for the future. |

In the
middle-distance races David Murphy had a
baptism of fire in the U/16 3000m, where
a top class field and the extreme heat
made it tough going. However he stuck to
the task well and finished strongly,
gaining valuable experience for the
future. David has natural speed and
stamina and just needs a season or two
of cross country running, to build up a
solid base. Keep an eye on this young
man, he has shown plenty of promise
already. In the girls U/17 300m Leanne
Foskin ran well in the heats but
didn’t make the cut on this occasion.
However following her fine run in the
Leinster championships, she has been
selected to represent Leinster in an
upcoming international competition
between, Munster, Leinster and Wales to
take place at the RSC in Waterford, So
well done Leanne. |

Leanne Ivory
just missed out on a medal in the girls
U/14 discus, when she was 4th
overall and within half a meter of the
bronze medal winner. Her best throw of
21m plus, is a great throw for a
relative newcomer to this event. She has
great natural strength and with
improvements in her technique will be a
strong medal contender at this event in
the future. She also competed in the
shot putt, where again she threw well.
Janet Moore made it through to both the
U/17 shot and discus final but was not
among the medals. Another talented young
athlete, who has the potential to excel
at these events in the coming years.
Well
done to all the athletes, coaches and
committee, who worked so hard over the
past year. St Senans AC is now at it’s
strongest for many years as a result.
Time now for a rest before it’s back
to the spikes and dikes, mud and crud,
when the cross country resumes in
September. |
