First
Noel
The club has produced many tough nuts
over the years but not many would be
capable of emulating the feat of
Ballygriffin man Noel Walsh. The veteran
marathoner did an impressive double
recently when he tackled the Belfast
Marathon a mere five weeks after
completing the Connemara marathon.
Finishing in a very respectable 4.01 the
57 year old has now completed 23
marathons in all including one in 2.47.
Throw in a dozen or so triathlons and
all the toughest mountain hikes in the
country and you’ll see what I mean
about being a strong man. Noel has been
a club member since the start back in
1977 and was a member of the club’s
first winning senior cross country team.
He has a keen interest in the
countryside and plans to go back
hillwalking again once he hangs up his
marathon shoes. However with accomplices
like Tom Roche that may not happen for a
while. For now though Noel is taking a
well earned rest before planning his
next adventure.

for the final night of the series,
Friday night, 19th May, with
a three mile race over the usual course
and with points for places very close in
a number of areas and runners able to
discard their poorer performances
competition will be very keen
over this shorter distance. Runners
should note the earlier starting time of
7.00pm.
Little
South Run
Don’t forget the Little South Run on
Sunday 18th June at 2.30pm is
fast approaching so whether its jogging
or slogging, get the runners on and pile
on the miles. The local hospice movement
will again be the beneficiaries of this
years proceeds and sponsorship cards
will be available shortly. Thanks to
Kelly & Dollard for their continued
support and a terrific prize fund each
year. Also to Bus Eireann who will again
sponsor the main raffle prize of a
€250 holiday voucher. Lots of spots
too, free T-shirts and goody bags for
the kids. Full details and a poster to
download can be had on our website or
ring Bill Lacey on 051 885684. Check out
how last
year's went.
Art
Attack
All the local schoolchildren are busy
designing a poster for the Little South
Run and we will be collecting the
entries on Friday 19th May.
Last year our T-shirt design proved a
big hit with the budding young artists
last year and we expect this year to be
even bigger and better. There’s prizes
for the top three entries and all the
posters will be displayed in the hall on
the day. So don’t delay get your
thinking caps on and break out the
paints.
Hug
a Vet week
Don’t forget it’s “Say
no to Ageism” week soon so get in
the spirit. Perhaps there’s a vet you
know who could use a hug. Ah go on… go
on, go on, go on.
Hall
of Fame
The
stunning new Kilmacow Sports Hall was
officially opened on Sunday last by MEP
Liam Aylward, with a huge crowd present
to witness the ceremony. The event was
overshadowed by the sad death of Francie
Walsh of Dunkitt, a former chairman of
the Parish Committee and a man who gave
sterling service to the local community.
On behalf of St Senans AC we would like
to join with those present in extending
our deepest sympathy to Kathleen and her
family on their sad loss. The hall was
the culmination of a body of work that
started back in 1992 and through the
hard work of a dedicated and visionary
committee under the stewardship of
chairman Charlie Gaule delivered the
project on time and under budget. Since
the contract first went out to tender in
2001 the work moved at a pace and there
was special praise for the assistance
given by Tom Hennessy, who supervised
the project. Local man Liam Fennelly,
whose firm Malone O Regan looked after
the planning and detail, have succeeded
in producing a facility which rivals any
sports complex in the country. There
were speeches by Liam Aylward MEP, Tom
Cooke Chairman BNS and priests Fr
O’Keefe and Fr Flynn. Loudest cheer of
the day went to number one supporter and
official tape cutter John Mulligan, who
along with others received a special
presentation for their contribution. The
opening was followed by a superb buffet
and entertainment, provided by the
hardworking ICA ladies. The hall which
will make a huge contribution to the
parish is a credit to all involved and
is proof beyond doubt that ordinary
people can indeed do extraordinary
things.
