Program of events
Throwing weights for competition
On Guard
St Senans athlete Aidan Lanigan was part
of the Irish Garda team, which competed
at the World Police Championships cross
country in Vichey, France last Sunday.
In a hotly contested race former
European cross country champion, Sergei
Lebed of Ukraine took the overall title
for the Ukraine in a time of 31.10 for
10,300m course. Aidan was the 2nd
scorer on the team behind Dublin athlete
Ronan Hartnett performance, while other
Irish athletes included Cork duo Ciaran
O’Sullivan and Mick Dunne. Aidan who is
a member of the Garda based in Tallagh
in Dublin had trained hard for the race
and should be well pleased with his
performance.
Saints
Alive
Not St Patricks mind, but St Senans
and St Josephs had their rematch last
Friday in The Sports Complex in Kilmacow.
It was again a great nights athletics
and well done to all the organizers,
especially the canteen crew who provided
much needed food and drink. St Senans
athletes who did well included Greene
and Kieran Wallis in the U/10 boys.
Stephen Greene, Eoghan and Gerard Wallis
and Jonathan Crowley in the U/12 race.
Darragh Dwyer who took 3rd
place in the O/14 event. For the girls
Katie Murphy, Eve Lacey and Sinead
McEvoy starred in the U/10 girls. Ailish
Conneely, Tara Lacey, Claire McEvoy and
Michelle McDonald in the U/12 race. The
O/14 race saw Aoife Butler pip twin Orla
with Rosanne Kennedy in 3rd
place.
Lightning
Strikes Twice
The mixed senior 4x100m relay was
the highlight of the night and the St
Senans team of Bill ‘na Muice’Lacey, PJ
‘Snags’Dwyer, Eddie ‘the Eagle’ Manning
and Darragh ‘the Actor’ Dwyer were up
against a crack or craked St Josephs
team that included Maria Murphy-Griffin,
Bernadette Phelan and anchored by Pat
‘Lightning’ Power. Lacey and Griffin
were neck and neck after the first leg
but Dwyer opened up a lead on the
second. Manning slipped a gear going
around the bend and it was that man Pat
again, who proved that lightning can
indeed strike twice as he hared to the
line for a stirring Joseph’s victory.
Maher and O’Keeffe in
excellent Form
Brian Maher, competing in the KBC St
Patrick’s Day 4-mile Road Race in Dublin
on Sunday, turned in an excellent
performance finishing in third place.
Brian travels to Edinburgh next week to
compete in the World Cross Country
Championships on 30th March
where hopefully he will perform equally
as well and contribute to a good Irish
team performance. Further afield at an
International Hammer throwing event in
Kuwait, Olympic qualifier, Eileen
O’Keeffe, had a good start to her
season. Throwing consistently in the
high sixties she finished in 4th
place with a throw of 68.56meters.
Records Broken in
Nenagh
Day 3 of the Leinster Indoor Track and
Field Championships, held in the indoor
arena at Nenagh, brought a considerable
number of medals to Kilkenny athletes.
In addition to winning medals a number
of new Championship Best Performances
were recorded. Kilkenny City Harriers
calimed two with Mary Kate Lanigan
clearing 1.65 meters in the under 17
High Jump, and in the 60m for Junior men
Jonathan Holmes set a new record with a
time of 7.27 seconds. Two further
records followed in the Masters Shot
Events. Verena Fenlon, St Joseph’s, set
a new record for the masters women with
a Putt of 9.95meters. For the masters
men it was the turn of Joe Kelly, Brow
Rangers, who set the record with his
11.76 meter Putt.

World
Cross Country
The 36th World Cross
Country race takes place in Holyrood
Park in Edinburgh on 30th
March with the first race off at 13.00.
Among the Irish runners will be KCH
athlete Brian Maher in the senior and
Ferrybank’s Paddy Hogan in the junior.
Its hard to see anything but an African
winner but the Irish team is stronger
this year with the inclusion of Alistair
Cragg. Our best hope however might be in
the women’s race where Fionnula Britton
will lead the charge. It’s bound to
bring back the heady days of Treacy,
Deegan and Quinn back in 1978, when
Bellahouston Park was the scene of a
historic win. Hopefully this year will
bring some more Irish joy.
Awards
Nights
The County Board Awards Night takes
place in the Parish Pump on Friday 4th
April starting at 8.30pm. All those
intending to attend should contact Bill
Lacey in advance to arrange tickets.
Meanwhile our own club awards will take
place on Wednesday 26th March
in the Parish Hall, with MC Rosanne
Kennedy on the mike. That alone should
be worth going for!!!
