Success in County T&F
St Senan’s athletes added another
dozen golds to their impressive tally at
the final stage of the county T&F
championships in Scanlon Park last
Sunday. There were some hugely
impressive performances including a
superb win by Luke Morgan after a
thrilling 1500m battle. In the younger
age groups Katie Murphy and Isabelle
Morgan had good wins, while for the boys
Evan Duggan again impressed. In the
junior events Leanne Foskin and Colin
Butler were both impressive winners,
while Damien Walsh won a senior gold.
Overall it has been a very good
championship for the club and bodes well
for the Leinsters in a few weeks time.
Well done to all the athletes who took
part.
Girls
Allowed
In the U/8 age group both Katie
Murphy, Eve Lacey and Alison Foskin had
excellent performances in the 200m
taking gold and silver, while in the U/9
age group Isabelle Morgan took gold with
a fine run by Sinead McEvoy to take
bronze. The club had five athletes in
the U/11 age group and Aoife Halley was
among the medals in 3rd place
with tara Lacey in 4th. Good
runs too from Clare McEvoy, Ellen Whelan
and Michelle McDonald. Sarah Molloy
competed well in the U/13 age group,
while twins Orla and Aoife Butler took
gold and bronze in the U/14 75mH. The
club had a clean sweep in the U/14
discus with Ciara Vereker taking gold,
Ciara Kennedy silver and Aoife Dennehy
bronze. In the U/15 age group Aisling
McDonals had a good run in the hurdles,
while in the U/16 discus Leanne Ivory
was within 20cm of gold after a fine
series of throws. In the U/17 discus
Sonya Aylward won a silver with Rosanne
Kennedy taking bronze. Sarah and Rosanne
were also on the podium in the track
events with Sarah taking silver in the
1500m ahead of Rosanne, while in the
100mH the order was reversed. Leanne
Foskin hada double win in the 3000m
taking both junior and senior titles.
Janet Moore also won a junior gold in
the discus with a fine series of throws.
Boys Oh
Boys
Evan Duggan and Martin Davis are
both very promising athletes and Evan
eked out a great win in the 200m just
getting the nod on the line. Martin also
ran very well to take bronze. There were
two medals also in the U/13 shot where
Tom Whelan took gold and Eoin McEvoy
bronze. In the U/14 shot Ian Ahearne won
a silver in a competitive affair. The
boys U/15 1500m saw Luke Morgan hang on
to fast early pace before storming clear
with 200m to go for an impressive win.
Conor Rochford had to make up a lot of
ground on the final lap of the U/16
1500m to get among the medals, but a
great last 100m saw him win silver. Also
in the U/16 age group Darragh Dwyer had
a good day winning the 100mH and placing
2nd in the triple jump. Colin
Butler ran 2.05 in the senior 800m to
take silver behind a very impressive
Eoin Everard. Colin recovered well to
win the junior 3000m and also place 2nd
in the senior event behind Denis
O’Sullivan of Thomastown. This race,
which was the brainchild of Bill Lacey
also had a team section and the St
Senans team of Colin, James Howley and
Robert Duggan won silver. In the senior
events Damien Walsh won the 110mH and
also had a good run in the senior 800m.
Belfast
Success for Sean
Sean Caulfield had a cracking run in
the Belfast Marathon on the Bank Holiday
Monday last finishing 8th
overall in a new club record of 2.41.24.
Sean was 3rd in the O/40
section and was with the leading female
finisher Marashet Jimma of Ethiopia for
much of the race. The overall winner was
John Mutai of Kenya in a time of
2.16.22. This was a great run by Sean
who had trained hard in the weeks
leading up to the race and was leaner
and meaner than ever for a marathon
event. The club record of 2.43 had stood
to Michael Ryan for many years and
Michael had given Sean some valuable
tips prior to the race. Sean is
currently in Lourdes acting as a helper
but might just avail of the opportunity
to cure those aching legs.
Water
Water Everywhere
But they can’t stop the spring!!
That was the way of it at the Ballygowan
sponsored 10K in Clonmel last Sunday,
where Sandis Bralitis, Ravis Zakis and
Dzinters Klavis proved that Latvia
produce great runners as well as great
Eurovision songs. I won’t dwell on the
Irish entry except to say that our John
Waters ditty turned out to be a damp
squib and quote the immortal words of
Seamus Ennis, ‘the best way to play a
bodhran is with a penknife.’ Adele
Walsh (37.35) had a fine run to take 3rd
place in the ladies section, behind
Niamh O’Sullivan of Riocht (34.57) and
Siobhan Doherty of Borrisokeane (36.35).
PJ Dwyer scored a sensational win in
the O/50 age category posting a world
ranking time of 38.01. PJ picked up a
nice pair of socks for his efforts,
knitted from the wool of a champion
Kenyan mountain goat. Hopefully the
goat’s molecules will seep up through
the soles of PJ’s feet and endow him
with even greater speed for Saturday
night’s race.
