Ken'
you believe it?
St.
Senans AC were well to the fore at the
Ferrybank Open cross country at the
Clover Centre on Sunday September 18th,
with some great performances including
three individual wins. The club had a
huge turnout for the event and the hard
training over the past few weeks came to
fruition with all our athletes showing
great strength and determination.
Girls
Just Wanna Have Fun.
And fun they certainly had in the U/9
race, where Tara Lacey showed off her
new orange spikes to good effect taking
a fine 5th place overall.
Close behind was Claire McEvoy in 9th
with Michelle McDonald also having a
great run in 10th.
In the U/11 age group Gemma
Aylward was our only performer and she
too ran very well placing 5th.
In the U/12 age group we had six runners
and Bronagh Kearns was best of the bunch
in 5th, with Ciara Kennedy 9th
and Ciara Vereker 10th. Great
run also from Karen Costelloe in 11th,
with Rachel Cashin and Aoife Dennehy
just a place behind. In the girls U/13
Aisling McDonald, an athlete who is
improving steadily, ran strongly to
place 6th overall.
In
the U/14 age group Chloe Laffan lead who
the St Senans squad in 6th
place, followed by Catherine Molloy in 8th.
Fiona Dennehy showed she can run as well
as walk with a 9th placing,
while Eimear Breathnach was just a place
back. In the girls U/15 race Rosanne
Kennedy battled hard to pull back the
early leader and then showed true grit
to hang on over the last lap for an
excellent 2nd place. A tough
cookie, wonder where she gets that from
Breda!. In the girl’s U/17 race Leanne
Foskin ran well finishing a clear 2nd
with Claire Walsh also having a cracking
run in 4th, while Janet Moore
was just a short way back in 6th.
Again great running all round. Last up
was Catherine Fennelly in the junior
girls and our All Ireland walks champion
was the leading lady again. Great
running by the girls and augers well for
the cross country season ahead.
Boys Zone
First
into the fray were the wily Wallis twins
Gerard and Eoghan in the U/9 age group
and it was Eoghan who got home first,
winning his first athletic trophy. Not
much to separate these two so keep up
the training lads. Next into action was
the ‘action man’ himself, Hugh
Morgan, who has been flying in training
recently. Hugh set off at a cracking
pace and had a brilliant run just
missing out on the top spot but showing
great talent and determination to take 2nd
place. In the U/10 race Donagh Meyler
was our only runner and he did very well
getting among the prizes in 8th
place. Another steadily improving
athlete, keep it up Donagh. In the U/13
age group Luke Morgan went with the fast
early pace and was always within a shout
of the leaders. On the final lap he
showed plenty of fighting spirit too and
was a close 5th at the line.
Another very impressive run.
In the U/15 race we had our first male
winner as Daniel Davis cut out the early
pace and then held off all challengers
for a great win. Well done Daniel. Finally
it was Colin Butler’s turn in the
junior men’s race and again Colin
threw down the gauntlet from the gun.
Over the early laps he opened a gap of
20m. On the final lap he was put under
pressure by the chasing duo, but showed
a cool head and plenty of endurance to
hold off the fast finishing pair. This
week Colin heads to University in
Limerick and we wish him well, as he is
not just a superb athlete, but a
pleasure to have in the club.
This was the club’s first run over the
country and already it is shaping up to
be our best season in many years. Lots
of hard work ahead though, so keep up
the effort in training. Thanks also to
our hardworking coaches James, Brendan
and Pam for all their efforts and to all
who help out at training sessions.
