Success
in European Juniors
Kilkenny
athletes Catriona Cuddihy and Eoin
Everard had a very successful trip to
Lithuania for the European Junior
Championships. Catriona ran a brilliant
semi-final placing 3rd in a
new PB time of 60.36 seconds. However
she was unable to reproduce a similar
feat on successive days and finished 8th
in the final. Eoin was unlucky as his
time of 1.51.98 would have got him
through on place finish had he been
drawn in the other semi-final.
Great as their achievements were they
were overshadowed by the performances of
Colin Costello, Star of the Sea, and
Danny Darcy, St Laurence O'Toole, who
won gold and silver respectively in the
1500m, a unique achievement by Irish
athletes and evidence that a good season
at cross-country is a solid foundation
for track success. Danny Darcy, who
hails from Bagnelstown, is a regular
visitor to Scanlon Park athletic track
where he honed his speed for these
championships.
Darcy took the field along through the
early laps reaching 400 in 60.47 and
reaching 800 in 2:01.12. He moved
slightly faster on the next lap and
passed 1200 in 3:01.44. Costello moved
ahead around the final turn sprinted
down the straight for a great Irish
medal haul.
Continuing
his success, Costello was 6th
in the Morton Mile at the Dublin
International , setting a new National
Junior Record of 4.01.83.
